Preparing for your Portrait Session with Us

Nobody likes photos of themselves that look bad, especially photos that you are paying for. Here are a few things you can do to help ensure a great portrait and a comfortable session.

Clothes

  • Dress for the setting; make sure that if you want to climb around in rocks for your portraits that you aren’t wearing 3 inch high heels.
  • Wear comfortable clothing; this doesn’t mean you should wear your PJ’s or gym sweats. It simply means that if you aren’t comfortable with what you are wearing, it will show in your portraits. Choose solid clothing colors, busy patterns and designs will distract from the most important part of the photo-YOU!
  • Clothes should be in good repair and not stained; retouching a photo to eliminate tears and stains after the fact will be very costly for you.

Hair

  • That “just cut” look may work well for grass, but for your hair, it is a different story, plan to get your haircut at least a week before your session.
  • Avoid brand new hairstyles for your session, you don’t want to be disappointed in your pictures because you changed your blonde, straight hair to green, curly hair the day before.
  • Bring touch up supplies with you, including a comb, hairspray and so forth. Check for stray hairs before your session.

Makeup

Ladies
  • Not all makeup is photogenic. Light and color is captured a little bit differently with a camera verses your eyes. Checking with a professional at a makeup counter can help you find makeup that will be captured beautifully by the camera and enhance your natural beauty.
  • Apply your blush lightly, adding a little bit of color with photo enhancement is far easier than taking it away, and we certainly don’t want you to feel like a clown during your portrait session. (Disclaimer:This statement is in no way meant to offend clowns.)
  • Apply your eye liner lightly, especially to your lower lashes-smudging can cause a shadow effect that will make you look tired, and your eyes look puffy.
Gentlemen
  • Eliminating a 5-o’clock shadow is next to impossible in photos, we strongly recommend that you come to your portrait session freshly shaven.

Jewelry

  • Choose jewelry that accentuates your beauty and works with your clothing choice. A good rule of thumb is that gentlemen should not wear more than 1 distinctive piece of jewelry (wedding ring excluded) and ladies can usually wear 3 or so. Look in the mirror before your portrait session and ask yourself if your jewelry distracts from you, if it does then maybe you should remove some.

Rest

  • Everyone is in a better mood when they get enough sleep. Being stressed, tired or crabby will show in your photos; so get a good night’s rest before your session.

Props

  • Props can be a great way to add a unique element to your portrait. Props are especially great for children and senior photos.

In Closing..

  • Portraits can be a lot of fun, and should be a reflection of you. We want you to be happy with the final result, we recommend thinking about your style before your session so that it is reflected in your clothing. Come to your session ready to have fun, and smile!
